So, we are going to start a group in which at least 10 of us each adopt one division of knowledge each week and are responsible for creating a set of cards for that division that week.
As it is my thought is that we should just alternate divisions by signing up one each week with whatever category we intend to do. Right now I am working on completing sets for each of the 50 states I’d like to start w/ geography. If people want to choose one division for the next week, for which they will be responsible for making either 5 or 10 cards(What do you guys think is reasonable? My thought is, that since you only do 5 encyclopedic cards at a time 5 is probably good to start.) Then you can just post your division and chosen category.
So the divisions are:
Mathematics
Art
Geography - States of the United States of America
Literature
Language
Science
Biology
Music
Human Physiology
History
I hope this will be lots of fun and give us all a chance to give our children a very full and diverse program.
Should I provide more than one picture per bit? With handmade bits, you only show one picture, but with little reader you can show more than one to demonstrate the bit. I am not sure if it is more beneficial to show a few pictures or just the one to keep it consistant. What are your views on this?
Also, I will just post the POI information as my Australian accent may be a bit strange for those of you in the US (or elsewhere).
I think having this group is a great idea and I am looking forward to being a part of it.

I would prefer to do 5 a week as I have very little experience with making POIs and just like all the other parents out there, no time! I am certain you will get may more EKWCG members by keeping the number at 5.
I think .doc or .rtf is best assuming you are planning on printing them to flashcards. And with the POIs it seems better to have them printed on the back of the flashcard so you can read them easily to your child. Power point is more of a presentation format, and although you could do a presentation with the pictures, the POIs as their own slide might be distracting, unless you are just planning on printing them out in which case might as well just use .doc or .rtf. However, I believe you get more loyalty points for uploading powerpoint…so I guess if you have a strong desire one way or another I would be happy to acquiesce.
Also, I’m assuming we’re starting next week right?

Yay, thanks for joining Tatianna. Any other takers? We still have Mathematics, Art, Literature, Language and Music. If anyone has any questions about what a particular category would entail just let us know.

For this week I just uploaded a new set of works of Leonardo da Vinci. Titles included are Annunciation, St John in the Wilderness (Bacchus), The Virgin and Child with St Anne, Madonna and Child with St Anne and the Young St John and Portrait of a Musician.
I actually think that this covers most of his major works (not including sketches and sclupures) other than Female Head (La Scapigliata), Madonna Litta, La belle Ferroniere, The Baptism of Christ and Portrait of Cecilia Gallerani. So maybe I will get those done some time soon (unless someone else wants the project).
I would love to join this group. I can do Music. But, what am I suppised to do? I haven’t read the book about teaching EK. Do, I write about Musicians or kinds of Music? Can any one give me an example to follow? and are the files due by Saturday?
Hi Heath, We’d love to have you join. For the Division of music Music the suggested categories are:
Musical Instruments
Musical Notes
Musical Symbols
Great Composers
Musical Intervals
Musical Chords
Great Singers
Great Performers
Ancient Musical Instruments
Musical Phrases
Here is an example from the book for how to do the musical instrument category.
Musical Instruments
Division: Music
Category: Musical Instruments
Set: Type of Instrument
Bit of Intelligence: Name
1st Magnitude: Type of instrument.
2nd Magnitude: Specific information about the type of instrument.
3rd Magnitude: How is the instrument played?
4th Magnitude: Specific information about how the instrument is played.
5th Magnitude: Parts of the instrument.
6th Magnitude: Specific information about a part of the instrument.
7th Magnitude: Where did the instrument originate?
8th Magnitude: What was the instrument’s first role?
9th Magnitude: A further role of the instrument (may be associated with a famous figure in music).
10th Magnitude: The modern role of the instrument (in the orchestra or in some other area).
So for each bit of knowledge (for example an instrument) you would gather the information in each of these 10 magnitudes. Then on the front of the card would be a picture and the back would be this information. Each day you cover one of the magnitudes for each set in each of the divisions (up to 10) you are teaching. For other categories you would simply create 10 magnitudes of knowledge that make sense for that category. If you have difficulty formulating the Magnitudes of intelligence for one of the groups let us know and we can try to make one up together.
Here is some more information from the book about Programs of Intelligence:
A POI is accurate i.e. facts and not opinion.
A POI is worded as clearly as possible so as not to be misinterpreted.
They can be used to relate information to each other from different sets of divisions
POIs should be interesting
They should be familiar (i.e. children should be able to relate to them)
They should be amusing where appropriate
I would recommend checking your local library to see if they carry or can obtain the book or even purchasing it yourself as it is an excellent reference.
