Vedic Math

Does anybody have information on Vedic Math? How to teach it? Any web sites?

I split this into its own topic from the Maths Equations thread.

I too would like to know more about this!

I did a quick search and came up with these sites that do a pretty good job at describing what vedic math is. It seams very interesting. I found there is also a franchise that is geared toward children learning vedic math called Math Monkey (I think)

I like the first link the best, it even has a tutorial to take you through some of the sutras.

Wow, Vedic Maths is incredible! I’ve never had so much fun, I couldn’t stop until I finished all the tutorials and I wanted to keep going afterwards . lol

Kumon also teaches many of the Vedic Math methods, as I remember doing those exercises when I was growing up, but I think the drilling method imposed by Kumon turned me off as a child

Karma to you guys!

Subtraction using “vinculum” or bar to signify a negative number.

Calculating change:- for example $80.00-$2.22=$77.78

                                             ---

This can be recorded as 8000-222=8222 note the bar above 222 to show that it is negative. You then use the sutra “all from 9 last from 10” to calculate the answer. Reduce the 8 to 7 and apply Sutra to remaining numbers.

This method can be applied to all types of subtraction :

                     - - - -

take 6453-1627=5 2 3 4 (result obtained as follows 6-1=5 4-6=2 5-2=3 and 3-7=4 remember that the bar denotes a negative number)

5234=52/34=4826 that is 50-2 and 30-4 The use of bar numbers removes the need to borrow.

With a little practice this approach can be used to calculate mentally.

Do you mean Vedic math for babies?

I’ve myself been into vedic math for long and have adopted it for quick multplication.
But for babies… I never thought about that.

That really sounds interesting.
If someone can throw light on that…
