teaching multiplication with a rap song?

Has anyone used DVDs like this one to teach multiplication? Does anyone have suggestions for a better DVD? My 8 yr old will be learning multiplication next year. He has ADHD inattentive type and it takes a lot of practice for him to learn a new skill. It would be nice if I could find a way to give him a headstart over the summer. He manages to zone out whenever it comes to memorization. However I noticed that rhymes have helped him retain some basics.

Have you checked out Rock N Learn? I can’t personally vouch for them yet, but they look promising.

Consider trying “times tales the fun way”

My son used the addition book and learned all his facts really quickly.

It seems to be a popular way to teach math to older kids, as seen here:

Lamar Queen is an 8th grade math teacher in Los Angeles, his methodology of teaching students includes writing and performing songs to reinforce lessons. When we discovered Lamar he already had a whole text book worth of songs and this video that he made with the help of teachers and students at his school. Although it is not polished, we believe in using art and music to teach children almost anything so we are happy to try and bring his mission of education through the arts to a wider audience. Look for more unique learning from Lamar Queen soon.

I always liked Schoolhouse Rock.

Lots of interesting ideas here, I just went and listened to all of them and still feel undecided. Going thru the links led to web browsing and even more selections. I need to make a grid of the pros and cons to keep it all straight.

Thanks for the input, Lori
