Teaching Children Emotional Intelligence & Communicating with Children

Dear All,

Please find below several excellent resources on how to teach your children emotional intelligience and communicating with children:

The first link is an excellent and classic work by the late child psychologist, Dr. Haim Ginott; followed by the additional work by two of his students, Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish:

And Dr. Ginott’s work is the basis of world-renowned marital/family researcher Dr. John Gottman for his books entitled Raising an Emotionally Intelligient Child, and What Am I Feeling (an abridged version).

Nicely illustrated by Aliki, written for children:

Another favorite book of mine on communicating with children is by the renowned psycho-linguist, Dr. Suzette Haden Elgin, in which she explains how to teach children the “taking turns” in conversation with the metaphor of traffic. Very nice work.

And for those who are have trouble find the right words, such as myself, I recommend the following books:

How to Say It To Your Kids, by Dr. Paul Coleman

And a book for teaching children (4 - 7 years) on how to speak politely is:

Karma to you!

Ayesha,

You are just a wealth of information! Thank you for sharing.

Dear NorCalMommy & Everyone,

Oh - in reality, I know less than most. And I also had the unexpected responsibilities of raising my husband’s [sick] daughter’s two young children from birth for about 6 years, before I had children of my own. And I used to read different types of parenting books because children don’t come with instruction manuals!

And I did find a book online for teaching the social graces to children with Asperger’s Syndrome, High-functioning Autism, and Related Disorders:

Enjoy!

Thanks Ayesha for so much information!
We are learning a lot from these.

Karma to you for always sharing!

Thank you for the titles. I am always looking for more books to read to help me with my parenting.
