Signing resources

I am trying to expand my signing vocabulary as I want to sign along with any dvds we watch & with LR. I am currently using two great sites to download flashcards:

signing time http://www.signingtime.com/blog/category/weeklysign
baby sign language http://www.babysignlanguage.com/flash-cards

However, there are less than 300 signs between the two sites. Are there any other good resources you would recommend?

This is a FREE online ASL course, complete with a professor who is very glad to help answer any questions via email!!! I have really learned a lot from this course. http://www.lifeprint.com/index.htm

That looks great - karma for the link

My favorite online dictionary is http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm.

My library has a great video series from the '80s, called “Say it with Sign.” It’s rather corny at times, which is why I love it. They’re a cute couple and they do a great job.

I second the website www.lifeprint.com. Bill vickers is awesome. I’ve watched his first 16 lessons. I would also advise you to watch asl songs on Youtube. Just make sure that the Likes are the majority when you watch a video. it’s important that the person doing the signing is accurate. Brianaott is one of the best asl signers! mygollyitsmolly is another. I purchased a year long dictionary account from signing savvy. It was very useful. one thing that you will be somewhat confused about is that of the many online dictionary sites, quite a few of the words will be different. that is a little confusing. Check the internet in your city/town for something like: asl, deaf coffee night. If you have anything like that in your city, it most likely means that the deaf community meet up once monthly to spend time together. You’ll get loads of exposure and make quite a few friends there. I’ve also had some asl tutoring lessons. Hmm… worth it but a bit expensive. Check your library for asl books. You will be amazed what you find. I love asl, and so do my 21 month old boys.

I also love ASL pro’s dictionary: http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro.cgi

The lifeprint website is wonderful. I have begun using it to learn ASL myself. It is a wonderful course. I also find it important to have an ASL dictionary handy.

Thanks for all the links, it’s great to have some new, tried-and-tested resources

This is a great thread - very helpful, thank you!

We are in the UK and have been doing the sing and sign DVDs and also Mr Tumble from the BBC does specific prgrammes called ‘something special’ and it’s full of signs and repetition. in a good way! You can watch them on line. Kids love him!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/something-special/

hi peasoup - only just saw your reply. We also love the Sing & Sign DVDs, although we have now switched over to ASL due the the greater availability of resources. My sister loves Mr Tumble too!

Theres a girl called Patty Shukla on YouTube who does free signing videos - we have watched about ten of them. If you just search for her name on the YouTube website something should come up. The videos are signs sung to music and she covers quite a few signs within each song. It might be a bit too basic if you have been signing for a while already but I thought I would mention it in case it helps. She also does general nursery rhyme videos and foreign language videos too so there might be something of use there!
