Should parents reward their kids for getting good grades? A true story

In my school there was a boy 5 years older than me who was near the bottom of the year in terms of exam results - I mean out of 100, he’d come around 95th in his tests. I knew because I was a close friend of his younger brother.

When the boy was 13 he managed to scrape into the senior school. His wealthy father told the boy if he got into Oxford or Cambridge he could get ANY car he wanted. Ferrari, Lambo, whatever…

But to do that the boy needed to turn his 95th position to around 1st or 2nd within 5 years.

5 years after his father’s promise the boy’s grades had improved so much that he was able to apply to Oxford, a huge achievement in itself. In the end he got rejected by Oxford, so didn’t get the car, but his grades put him in the top 5 of the year.

So from being in the bottom 5, aged 13, he left his school with grades that put him in the top 5.

Lesson of the day? A kid that is motivated can do amazing things - if you want your kids to do well you need to find out what motivates them…
