Screen time

Hello everyone!
I am hoping for advice…i have a 21month old girl and I am starting to contemplate letting her use the ipad for educational apps only. I already let her watch educational clips, flashcards, LR etc but she never gets to actually hold the device and use it.

However, I am worried that she will become addicted to it and not want to do anything else! I have a 10yr old cousin who is pretty much addicted to playing games etc on his ipad and I don’t want this to happen.

There seems to be so many really good apps for teaching though and I worry that she could be missing out on great learning experiences by not letting her use it.

What do you all think? Has anyone else let their toddler use technology? Did they get too attached to it?

Thanks

We have allowed our daughter to use educational apps on the iPad for as long as I can remember, and she is 25 months old now. She definitely knows her way around the iPad and has learned so much through the apps that we download for her. I don’t find that it’s any different than showing educational DVDs or videos on the computer. I wouldn’t let her watch endless hours of television (nor would she want to), and the same goes for the iPad.
We only use it in moderation, and she doesn’t even ask for it everyday. We use it to reinforce concepts that she’s learning, and I find that it is extremely helpful in making the concepts “stick.” I have a thread going about the different apps that we have used/enjoyed for early learning.
I think you will find that many members are big fans of this technology

Thanks so much for your reply! I’ve looked further in to the different apps and I think we’ll give it a go!

Thanks again

No problem at all! I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how easily your toddler learns while using educational apps on the iPad
My daughter used to love the Preschool Prep apps. She still loves the Endless Reader, Endless Numbers, and Endless Alphabet.

My nearly 8 year old is totally addicted to Tablets and computer things…like Animal Jam, Minecraft and more. I let her use my Samsung Note phone and I can barely find my alarm clock or camera on it due to all the apps she has downloaded.

She sneaks things into her bed to do under the covers when I think she’s asleep.

So be careful - it can be a real headache and a real Battle

Thanks for your reply Nikita! 😀

Good info!

Thanks guys! Finding Minecraft was her undoing - some youtuber named Stampylongnose or Stampylonghead - she is addicted to his channel.
Minecraft is a real problem for many kids these days.

Infact, many homeschooled kids do MInecraft activities as part of their homeschool learning. I know this as I’m in homeschool groups and when I started homeschooling was the exact same time she discovered Stampylongnose. So I tried getting her involved with local homeschoolers, who it turns out have Minecraft meet-ups where they all meet at a library to get on their laptops or ipads and do MInecraft gaming.

And you can google “using Minecraft for homeschooling” or “using Minecraft for children’s education” and you’ll find it’s a popular topic.

Thanks to Minecraft, And Stampylonghead, I put her back in school and gave up on homeschooling - so she could socialise with REAL KIDS and REAL ADULTS in the REAL FRESH AIR and REAL SUNLIGHT.
Yes, she did that while homeschooling but a lot less than she did (and does) when going to school.

And get exercise. That’s a problem with computers. They cut down on the exercise time and playing outdoors.
You cant just let them walk to the park or pool anymore and it isnt practical to take them all the time.
