Hi everyone,

just wanted to introduce my self…I am a mother of one boy who is 4 years old. He was suppose to start junior kindergarten but i decided to homeschool him. We live in canada, ontario to be more specific, so children start school at the age of 4 here, just incase someone is wondering.

Someone recommended this site in a homeschooling group that I am in. And I thought I should check it out.
I’m trying to work on reading my son, but it seems like he is not getting it. I mean he knows the alphabet very well, but when i try to get read, or make the pronounication of the letters, his a bit hesitant. Any advise of what to do?

Thank you

Hi ummhamza!

Welcome!

How fun! I’ve homeschooled by 4 older boys and have started teaching early reading with my 5th. I taught the older boys with the traditional (mostly phonics) method. For my older ones Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons book helped them go from knowing their letter sounds to reading words. http://www.starfall.com/ is also a great website.

From what I understand from this forum, teaching reading using the (whole word/flashcard) method should also work for your 4 year old. Even my older boys love watching the words when I use Little Reader. I’ve read that you should slow down the speed when showing words to older children (they say 1 second a card for babies). Perhaps another mom has some understanding on the speed of showing flashcards to older children?

The Teach Your Child to Read part of this forum ( http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-to-read/ ) also has a lot of great info.

Glad you are here!
