Mental math and imagination

Has anyone tried mental addition and subtraction with imaginery stories?

My DD seems to do her best maths when it is in story form - so if she’s playing lions then I’ll ask her how many lions are in the cage and how many outside then ask her how many are there altogether and then in pretend move them in and out of the cage til she has added and subtracted all combinations for the number she choose. It seems to come very easily to her because she can see it in her head.

sounds like she would be an excellent candidate for abacus down the road! what a neat idea, story math, we’ll have to try that.
