"Kon'nichi wa" from Kyoto, Japan

Hello

I’m an American who has immigrated to Japan to raise my daughter with my best friend (also called wife) and her family.

We live in Kyoto, among the rice fields and parking lots, the irrigation canals and garbage, the temples and pachinko arcades, the incense and incinerator exhaust.

I’ve always been interested in the areas of learning, perception, awareness, and how personal intelligence and aesthetics are developed in each of us. The choice of conceiving and raising another person is an astonishing and profound exploration for me.

I am particularly interested in how early childhood experiences, including education, can prepare children for problem-solving, conflict-resolution, and dynamic systems thinking. Reading, speech, observation, music, and math are -obviously- foundations of these more complex lifeways.

Among my favorite thinkers are Dana Meadows, Ivan Illich, Paulo Freire, Daniel Odier, Howard Odum, Dōgen Zenji 道元禅師 and Zhuangzi 莊子 .
