How to teach other Language Like French and Spanish

Greetings Parents,

We are in India and would like to teach foreign language French and Spanish to our little one 2 and half year old. However we don’t know any other language other than English.

How we can teach and communicate with them? Is it possible to get very good resulting from my little one?

Where we can buy this product?

Looking for your valuable suggestions to start new journey for my little one.

Thanks,
Jothi…

Hi, we are also experimenting with forein languages but concentrate mainly on english now. Our children are in similar age so I just write what we use.

www.languagemom.com - for french - we have just started and like it a lot. I am trying to find something similar for spanish so I am considering http://www.readingamigo.com/

I also like Boca Beth but haven’t tried it yet - it is different approach but since both languages-english and spanish- are forein to us this approach might work well for us.

Some of these programs you can find in Points Redemption section here on Brillkids.

But if you do just a quick search here on the forum you will find lots of suggestions.

Hi Jothi,

You will find foreign language DVD recommendations on the Teaching Other Languages board, however, when teaching a second language, the majority of DVD’s do not teach READING in those languages. Little Reader is the most ideal program for that. After purchasing the kit from the forum store (green tab above) you can visit the “Little Reader Library” (on the left on the gray bar above) and download files in all kind of languages at no cost! When teaching a non-native language, I simply repeat the words along with my kids. it will take a bit longer to learn since you do not speak it fluently, but teaching a second language it is far easier for your child to learn than you might think! I was really intimidated to begin teaching a non-native language, once I got over that block it was much easier.

I also wanted to suggest finding a babysitter that speaks a language other than your native language (unless you already have family to help you with this.) That way, they can teach baby while you have a date night or outing, it’s a win-win. They can help reinforce a second language. You can also look for immersion preschools in your area, but they typically do not teach reading this young, only speaking, so you’ll still need to handle that part on your own. Have you downloaded the free e-books from our homepage yet and a 2 week free trial for Little Reader? That is the best place to start! And then if you choose to supplement with DVD’s, there are many posted on the Foreign Language board: http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-signing-speaking-foreign-languages/ You’ll also be able to read some parent reviews of products here as well: http://forum.brillkids.com/product-discussions-and-reviews/

I am going to go ahead and move this to the correct board for you. Best of luck!

TmT

Thanks lelask and TMT…

Please help me to download the free e-books in Brillkids. I am not able to find out the exact path.

Jothi…

Go to http://www.brillkids.com/ and scroll allll the way down to the bottom of the page, there you will find 4 e-books available for download.

For the trial, you can go here: http://www.brillkids.com/teach-reading/

Hope that helps!

Hi Lelask

Thanks for the list of resources - we also use most of those. We also really like Speekee for Spanish and French with Serge DVDs.

But I have not heard of languagemom before - I am very interested in this! Could you give some more information about what is involved in this programme?

Thanks very much

I am not fluent in Spanish, so I am trying to learn. I am using www.spanishdict.com. Its free. Plus MIT has an open source course at http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/ and they offer all the college level material for Spanish. All for free.

For my kids, I found a great series called SALSA which is a 42 episode Spanish TV series. Its also free and found here: http://www.gpb.org/salsa. You can also found free a curriculum that goes with the series here under foreign language: http://edu.wyoming.gov/Programs/standards.aspx. I am going to be using these programs to supplement Brill Kids Little Readers (which I can’t wait to purchase in March!). hope that helps.
