How to Hold a Pencil- a rare verse on it

I was searching for the correct way to hold a pencil to help my son and found this rare verse that somebody

found from Bodelian library in England. I thought I should share it with you all.

Here it is:

Between your thumb and two fingers place

Your pen to write with comlines and grace;

Your thumb first aloft, as highest bestowe,

Your forefinger next, your middle finger belowe.

Hold softly your pen, lean lightlie thereon,

Write softlie therewith, and pause thereupon.

For swiftness will come of itself anon,

Ill tricks are soon caught, but not so soone gon.

  • From the Writing Schoolmaster by Peter Bailes, 1590

Notice the old spelling…these are not spelling mistakes!

wow that just shows how important it is to learn how to hold a pencil correctly, that was interesting. I have read somewhere that one more method is to place the pencil with the writing end toward you on a table , pinch it at the point you want to hold it, (I suppose we could mark this point for the kids ) and then just flip it back upright. the middle finger falls in place. I havent tried it yet on my child but I tried it myself, seems like it should work!

That’s a very nice verse. Thank you for sharing.

very interesting topic. Thanks for sharing too!

Wow! :slight_smile:

hey sansio -
Yes, my parent educator recently told me about the method you described - I have been trying it with my daughter (who had developed a funky pencil grasp) and it is working pretty well! Thanks for sharing. :slight_smile:
