How much attention matters

This is a blog I love. This post I am linking is specifically about the importance of being able to pay attention. Low income children have a lesser ability according to MRI scans. However if they are given interventions to help with attention they work. IQs increased on average 7 points.

I haven’t looked arou dyes, but I would love to get a complete list of what they did.

Disclaimer: I haven’t checked te data… Just read the report above.

Don’t worry I checked enough of the background facts to ensure its worth reading
There are a number of studies proving benefits of attention and focus and also the ability to forward plan in pre school environments…some I found on this forum.

I know that executive function is paramount for success. The marshmallow study comes to mind. I just don’t know if it legitimately raises IQ on a average by 7 points. That is quite a leap. Makes me wonder what activities specially the kids were doing. This is a huge bit of information for preschools if it is this effective.

This is the scientific paper (if you have access through your institution):
http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/06/26/1304437110.full.pdf+html?with-ds=yes

It’s pretty accessible. If you find the statistics a bit intimidating, just read Introduction, Discussion (i.e., the interpretation of results), and Conclusion.

Thank you,
I always read all the original data on studies as I know how easily it can be misconstrued. I just hadn’t had the time to look at it yet. Thank you for the link.
