Excellent classical poetry books! Teaching poetry

Merry Christmas everyone!

Just wanted to share an excellent open source book ( it is copyright free, as it is from the last century  ) and it has wonderful collection of classical poems that are great for children.

Poetry is so important in developing child’s sense of rhytm and rhyme and beauty of the language. It can be read to babies from the very beginning, we use a lot of Christian Mother Goose Rhymes, as well as some classical works.

When I came across this book, I felt it would be great to share with others, as it is good variety and selection of some great classical poems.

Hope you enjoy them!

I will try to share some other poetry books for babies and children as well.

A lot of the beautiful poems, which considered the golden treasury of English, do not need to be purchased in expencive books, as most of them are public property now, and can be downloaded from the Library of Congress or British Library.

In fact I love some of these older books, and my daughter seems to enjoy us reading the poetry a lot.

Here is another great poetry selections :

The Cambridge book of poetry for children (1916)

The children’s book of poetry: carefully selected from the works of the best and most popular writers for children ([c1879])

Child life: a collection of poems (1871)

And definetly this one, we used it off and on, it has poetry from W. Wordsworth, C. Marlowe, A. Tennyson, W. Shakespeare, H. W. Longfellow and others, and they are selected and adapted ( length wise) for young readers, I will absolutely recommend this:

The Children’s Garland from the best poets; selected and arranged (1884)
