Educational DVDs on Netflix

I thought it’d be neat to start a list and maybe some reviews of educational DVDs available on Netflix. I know I don’t always know what to search for or what’s available!

Some I’m aware of:

Little Pim: English, French, Spanish, and Chinese (Disc only)
-I have only seen one (Spanish disc 3), but we really like it

Preschool Power (disc only)
-I have not yet seen any of these, but I like the concept. Real little children show how to do things they can do “by myself”, like how to put on a jacket.

Rock n learn phonics (disc only)
-haven’t seen it either.

There are actually a lot that comes up when I search the word “phonics”. Including hooked on phonics and phonics 4 babies, anyone have experience with any of these?

Not sure. I’ve just recently read that Netflix is going away from using DVD’s and going to streaming through the computer. Sort of like an on demand thing.

If you PM Teaching My Toddlers I’m sure she’ll share her successes with you. I think she’s been able to access several learning shows through Netflix.

Here’s my current Queue, I know there’s a few others that were already on this list that we already rented, I will try and remember and add them at the bottom

LeapFrog: The Storybook Factory

Growing Up Wild: Vol. 1

Don’t forget that your library is a great resource too. I was shocked by how many kids learning titles mine has, many designed for classroom use but work just as good for homeschool. Things like Signing Time, and lots of animals and geography. There is a company called Schlessinger Media that makes a TON, math, science, you name it. See if your library has them or just go browse online or on the shelves.

Oh, and we have one of the hooked on phonics FUNdamentals DVDs. They’re not that great. We’re big fans of the HOP system and lessons, but these are kind of add-on “fun” dvd’s and I don’t think they’re presented very well, especially for the younger audience. They are supposed to teach colors, numbers, etc but I don’t think they do a very good job, I don’t let my kids watch them because I don’t think they will work. Not sure on the baby version tho.

If you type in Sign Language you will get lots of hits too.

And yes, I also read the article that they are going to be going to “on demand” more soon. I just don’t see how it will work out until they get some of the kinks smoothed out re: bandwidth caps and widening the on-demand selection. Right now there just aren’t that many movies to watch in the on-demand area and the options are FAR more vast when it comes to learning titles on the actual DVDs. I am just going to use it while I can and hope hope the transition is delayed as long as possible, and when they finally do convert they will have a better on-demand product to offer.

You totally inspired me to dig through Netflix today. I started adding dvd’s like crazy, I may go back and prune them later. I also add in the ones that aren’t available on netflix yet but are listed. My hope is that is enough people do the same, they will recognize the demand and get more learning DVDs sooner (either physical or streaming, makes no difference to me!).

Oh and I was adding indiscriminately, some of these might be pure garbage, I have no idea?

There is a series I came across called “Special Kids” (it’s somewhere on this list) that is created for kids with special needs to help teach them day to day living tasks and basic concepts in math etc. I want to check it out so I put a title on hold, maybe it will help reinforce math for DD too, but if it’s good it seems like it could be a great resource for parents of differently-abled kids.
