comparing homeschooling curriculums - what do you use?

I hope this thread could be a help to people starting to homeschool

I am using A Beka curriculum with my kids. I like it. It’s colorful, structured, easy to understand (even for a non-native English speaker like me). Phonics based reading and writing, non-Evolution Christian based. One book per subject per year. Very American, so I don’t use all the subjects (as I am not American).

What about you?

When my mom homeschooled myself and my two brothers she would get used text books from the public school. She also suplimented with library books. I plan to homeschool my little ones, (I only have one so far), and I would like to write my own curriculum. Has anyone done this? I think there is enough access to info these days that you don’t have to spend a lot of money for your kids to get a good education.

I am currently writing my own curriculum, but later on i plan on using ACE ministries and the time4learning.com We will use both at Kindergarten right now we are in preschool using Danielle’s place curriculum ABC I believe, and hubbardscupboard.org as well. Then I compose my own out of several websites, but I am a homemaker so i have the time tod that well at night when everybody’s is asleep.

Hi omimama

I’m doing something similar, using the textbooks which the public schools are using, and then supplementing with other resources from the library, internet etc. I do agree you don’t need to spend a lot of money on homeschooling in this aspect. But I still end up buying lots of books for my boys because the books may not be available in the library. And they love reading so much that’s the first thing my eldest son does when he wakes up in the morning, and my 2nd son might follow next.

We use local public school text books for their Hungarian schooling as well. It’s the books/curriculum in English that I am mostly interested in knowing about.

Hi momof3boys,

I was just talking to my husband this morning about creating an area in our budget for educational things. There are so many things I would like to get for our dd but living on one income won’t allow unless we save. I thought I could get a head start if I start saving now,(she is only 5 months).

Does your library have an interlibrary loan program? What I do is look up books online (at a place amazon so I can see reviews) and then go to my library’s website to see if they have it. I can also see if any of the other libraries in my county have it, if so they will send it to my local library. If there isn’t a waiting list for the book I usually get it in a few days.

But being on a budget has forced me to be creative. Which is a good thing I’m sure.

Happy Teaching

My mother ran a very large homeschooling resource library. Where members paid a memebership fee and could borrow materials to use and or copy. Luckily I able to use any of these materials. Check with your local homeschooling groups many have these libraries.

I am using a mix of materials to make my own curriculumn. Here in Ontario the government bookstore has a book your can get for each ggrade that shows what needs to be learned that year. It was actually put together for parents of school children but is a great resourse for making sure everything gets covered.

I really like the “Learn at home” books as well. You can get one for each grade. The are under $20 and cover everything that needs to be learned that year with day to day lessons already written up. They are easy to add my own material too for extra info on a certain subject. They have a great teachers section to give instructions or suggestions on how to teach a subject. They are available from K-8 I believe.

MOTHER OF FAITH;
Does ACE ministries have a web site?
What do you use out or off of the time4learning.com & hubbardscupboard.org
And what is this? Could I have more claification on is the a curriculum or …Danielle’s place curriculum ABC I believe.
Thanks

I was wondering whether it is possible to share materials and costs with other homeschoolers? What is the legal issues with that?

For example I’m really interested in purchasing the pre-school montessori curriculum but it’s like $800 - and if I could split that up with say 4 other parents - say we each bought a manual and then photocopied for the other parents - would that be illegal? And would other parents be interested and doing something like that?

I am not sure abou the legal issue with doing that, but if there wasn’t one I would be interested.

It all depends on the company. Some companies give you permission to copy for your personal use only and others are strict when it comes to copy writing. It is better to ask the company than to risk a lawsuit.

Your welcome!

Are you asking about Accelerated Christian Education homeschool curriculum? http://www.schooloftomorrow.com/Default.aspx

I used the ACE curriculum from 8th grade to 12th grade.

Here is the link that I am talking about http://www.aceministries.com/homeschool/Default.aspx
www.time4learning.com is a virtual homeschool program for grades pre-k through 9th and it runs around 20.00 a month
www.hubbardscupboard.org is a theme based curriculum for 2-4 year olds, you have to print the items out and go by the pre-set calander to teach.
www.daniellsplace.com you have to pay for some of the curriculum there, and yes it is illegeal to share their content with other outside of your home.
www.adaycare.com is a great website that offers monthly themes but you have to pay for it.

From my understanding anything copyrighted is illegeal to share unless stated on the website that it may be used for commercial use or ministorial use. Be careful. During my search i have run into a lot of legal issues.
All websites are different however. Be careful when sharing passwords to others to online programs that you have paid money to obtain the access to because the company has your computers IP address if you purchase their curriclum through the internet. They know who uses what and where. However some allow 2 computers to be on the account. Again all copyrights are different. There is a grey line between the legal issues. My advice check with a lawyer who handles these type of cases.

remember if you use items from the web remember to include the source of where it came from for future reference some websites even state that you have to include the source before being allowed to print, save, copy or paste.

They even have college credit classes as well.

I really like this program, but my son isn’t ready for it yet. He has another year to go. I am going to start him at age 3 with this curriculum. I think it was going to run around 300.00 for the whole year, all workbooks included. I think, well in my state, pre-k through 8th grade doesn’t have to be graded by this company but 9-12th grade does, it costs cheaper to do it this way instead of having someone else grade the workbooks you or the teacher grades them. And yes if you have younger siblings that need the curriclum next you don’t have to purchase the curriculum again. So if anyone has the curriculum already you can just purchase them used.

My brother homeschools his high schooler, and he loves it.

I am even taking the college credit courses myself, and loving it.

I recently contacted the company to find out if a group of homeschooling parents could pool together to purchase their curriculum. They said they would consider it if they has more details. So…if you are interested would you please PM me and I’ll give you the details.

I plan to write my own curriculum until it seems too hard to do so (when mid high school age I imagine…).

There is wwwsonlight.com and www.sonlight.com.au which is a 7th Day Adventist homeschooling organization. The American one say a pack can do several year levels, so family members can share…
