Choose books that expand your child’s learning

Reading should not be one dimensional and should ideally perform multiple functions. For example, once my son became a better reader and began to read on his own, he bought a series of animal books that were advanced for his age, he is 5 and the books were more appropriate for a 10 to 12 year old.

However, because of the reading system we used, he was able to read more than half of what was written in these books.

But more surprising was that because of his interests in these subjects (sharks, bugs, dinosaurs, deep sea creatures and dangerous animals), he was able to expand his knowledge greatly including learning the (sometimes very complex) names of all these creatures, their eating habits, where they live, the continents and the oceans they can be found in, etc.

By teaching your child to read using books that they are interested in and on subjects that they enjoy, they will read these books repeatedly, thereby not only increasing their reading skills, but also expanding their encyclopaedic knowledge and this makes your job of home schooling infinitely easier.
