Actually, not too different from teaching a child how to read!
To young children, it’s just a recognition of images, which they do very well. In the case of reading, when they learn using the whole word method when they are very young, the whole word is an image to them. The only difference is that with words, they start to be able to decode these images intuitively and figure out the rules of phonics over time.
