Are you going to teach chess?

not meaning to hijack the thread, but had to comment: according to http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/, chess star, magnum carlson makes over 1M, thanks to chess - nice! here’s more: http://www.newsinenglish.no/2011/08/03/chess-genius-carlsen-doubles-money/. also, on the benefits of teaching chess; http://chessbenefits.blogspot.com/, as well as how now it’s becoming mandatory in certain countries to teach in the elementary years - pretty interesting.

so, are you going to teach your child chess? if so, when and how will you start? are you a chess player?

I plan to teach chess. Most likely around the age of 5 to all of my children. I may introduce them to the game around 3ish, but I plan for regular chess games to be a part of their official education once they are of typical school age. They don’t have to compete or be greats, but they will have to play. At least 3 times a week in grades 1,2 and 3 after 3rd grade, they’ll play maybe 5 times a week. (Unless they play regularly for fun.)

I would like to have some things like music, chess and strategy games be a part of their primary education.

Interesting. My 3yr 11mo son has been asking for us to teach him chess. We have no idea where his desire has come from, but figured he may be too young… then again, the world thinks many things are too advanced for little ones and are wrong! Maybe we’ll haul out the board tomorrow  Thanks for the nudge!

We do not have serious plans but somehow we started early
We have a large luxury chess set and since 2 years we have a game - we take out all the chess pieces, put them in a right order on a desk and than put them back in a box. Now (4.5) we learn also some moves

I’ve got a big set and let my 1 year old play with it, show him where the pieces start and how they move with hand signs and noises for each. The king is fat and moves with a slow thump thump, the knight neighs and the queen move fast with a swish swish etc. that only to make it fun for the baby.

I let him watch videos of people playing chess, we made a couple of our own, but that takes too long.

I made very fast 2D chess animated gif files for him to watch, he loves them, I couldn’t attach one as an example because they’re 1meg files, but I use these every day because it takes little time and my baby enjoys them so much.

Yep! Just because it’s fun! My girls play against each other and against daddy. They learnt at age 5 and my son is learning now at age 4. I read it was good for concentration and future thought, so I encourage it. My oldest tends to space out a bit  I wouldn’t make them play though, it can be really boring for some people, it takes a certain type of person to enjoy the strategy. I could take it or loose it, I enjoyed it years ago…now I find other things more stimulating, or brain expanding…
