An Old Father learning how to teach again after 40 years.

Hello everyone,
I’m really new at this, and really need some help and/or advice. I was 54 and retired when my Son was born. His mother was 45 and died delivering him. :frowning: My son’s sister, (My only other child) is 40 with four teenage children of her own. It has been a struggle raising him by myself, No “struggle” is the wrong word, labor of love would be more appropiate. I really wish I had known about early reading software before now. I’ve had to go back to work to support us, so now I feel my time is limited. My Son is in school now an he is struggling with his reading. He’s 5 now and I’m concerned that my approach at teaching could limiting his abilities. I had considered a private tudor, but I thought I would try computer software first. So if anyone has any advice or suggestions to help me help him. I would be most appreciative. Naturally, as a Father, I only want the best for him, so that he can grow to be the best he can be

Hi,

The LR will going to be helpful for your kid in reading and learning, besides that you and also opt for LR math and Music if they have any interest in music.

Though u have engaged tutors for you child, but on every weekend you should personally devote some time to his studies…As your chid is 5 and as per what i have studies morethan 50 % of his brain is already developed, but still you can work hard on your child…

Find out what interests him most…like my child is very naughty…and to make him teach i have be like him…like sometimes when he is in a mood to shout…then i make him teach in that way…eg. in an excietd way he shouts days of th eweek with me. …so one has to behave like a kid…i haope this will heply you to some extent…

you can also try www.starfall.com I think all kids love that site. Try and limit tv and read to him alot. Make a little library for him if he doesn’t have one yet. Please write back and let us know how he is doing.

Hi…welcome. I just found out about the starfall.com website last month and my son loves it. Like the other user suggested, its free and great for preschooler through first grade. Also, have you heard about Kumon? Private tutors can be expensive, but Kumon might be good. The pricing depends on where you live. The website is www.Kumon.com. The Kumon concept is learning through repetition and the child has worksheets which they complete weekly. There is another website where you can make your own worksheets and print them out www.worksheetworks.com.

You should also try the free downloadable material from this website, it will really help and its free. Get him into playing music if he is interested. Violin, piano, etc…but be involved and patient.

Something to get him exicited about reading and into books would be Summer reading programs with your local libraries so its perfect timing for you.

Best of luck to you.

one more things, the little reader is ok, but my son wasn’t too interested in it, maybe its designed for little babies rather than older babies like mine. So I was disspointed. Just my opinion.

I don’t know much about teaching older kids but you can always check out the group for older kids… http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-older-child/
