4months starting flashcards.

Hi everyone, i’m about to start flascards with my almost 4month old and was just wondering, since for the next few months, i won’t know if she really knows what I’m teaching, would I need to go over the same flash cards or just assume she knows them and go on. I’m just thinking by the time she’s a year, we would have gone through quite a lot, so do I restart them in a few months. Did anyone start teaching at 4 months, if so what did you do. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks.

I would also like to know about this question! My youngest just turned 4 months.

I believe you should show the same words very often for the first couple of months. After that, your baby will start to pick up on what words look like, and you can show them less. You can always bring the retired cards out every once in a while for a refresher. YBCR shows the same words over and over, and you are supposed to use the videos twice a day for a month or two for each video. The same thing applies to paper flash cards or LR.

thanks a lot nhockaday, sounds great, just wondering if showing same flashcards won’t get boring for her, also you said she will start to pick up on what words look like, how do I know she is doing that if she can’t talk yet?thanks a lot for your reply.

That I can’t say, but she will need to see them many times to learn them.

zoe22,

I started showing my daughter flash cards when she was 3 1/2 month old. She is now almost 5 months. I kind of did it bakwards because I printed the flash cards from this website and then I found out about Doman’s method. I have been showing here the flash cards I printed by categories while I get all the materials ready to start Doman’s. Since they can’t talk you can only assume they are learning what you are showing them, but they will let you know they are not interested in those cards anymore. For my daughter in about five days she ready for something new. I have been learning to read my baby’s signs so I know when she is not into the session and I just stop. Sometimes I do it three times, some times only once it depends on how she is doing. She definetly is more interested when I’m showing her a new categorie so we’ll see if once I start Doman’s the retiring words system may get her attention. When she doesn’t seem to like a categorie I put it aside and try to show it to her a different week. This is what I had to do with the dots for math.

Hope this helps a little bit. You’ll do great!

Earlier the better!
You can teach alot till the time your baby is mobile.Remember that your baby is smart. Please don’t show the same words for a long period of time. Also change their order. Change your voice when you say the word. Show the words in different forms of writing it helps alot.
Just because your baby cannot say its enough watch their behaviour carefully.
If they are enjoying they will always want to do it.
My daughter liked animals and their sounds so no matter how tired she may be she will want to see it again and again…
Make it fun from the start and you have plenty of time to teach them…

Can you start with the Doman program at this age (showing word 15 times, than retire it) or is it too early? Nhockaday said she thinks that it’s better to show the same words for the first two months… How many words? Is it already OK to introduce other languages or is it better to leave that for later (meaning reading)? TX!

Hi some of us have posted our results that we see on this link and what we taught below, hope it would inspire you

http://forum.brillkids.com/general-discussion-b5/results/

Also, i hope when you are going thru it, to also update a little there so that we all can see and note the results for all … i hope more would contribute too …

I have posted link for other materials and what else you can also do to teach your baby … and some things that i wish i had done too … hope it will be useful… i follow the GD method as closely as i can …

anyway it would be good to get the GD books especially the how smart is your baby, and how to multiple yoru baby’s intelligence … just follow it and try to have fun … its hard to tell if there is results … and can be quite enduring … until maybe when she can express … good luck …
